1629 - Iceland, Reykjavik, Gullfoss.
Description
Gullfoss falls (Hvítá river), a panorama of 12 vertical pictures.
Early 20th century, foreign investors wanted to dam the Hvítá to build a hydroelectric power station. However, the owners of the Gullfoss, Halldór and Tómas, did not want to sell the land, after which the speculators started doing business directly with the Icelandic government behind the two their backs. The story goes that Tómas' daughter Sigríður Tómasdóttir had walked all the way to Reykjavik to fight their case, and she would throw herself into the waterfall if the construction of the power station continued. Although construction never started for other reasons, there is a stone plaque in memory of this daughter at the top of the waterfall.
